Choosing a replacement filter is easy — right? You just look at the manufacturer and serial number on the existing filter and find a filter with the matching number. That’s the replacement. Easy. Right?
Yes…and no.
Replacement filters can be as simple as ordering the exact same thing. But what if you’re new to the building? What if the filter that was installed last year isn’t the right one for the job today? A carpet manufacturing facility needs different filters to protect workers from airborne particles than an office building.
When choosing replacement filters, ask yourself the following questions:
- Has anything changed in the building or system since the last time the filter was changed?
Changing conditions or changing uses of the interior space may call for a different kind of filter. - Is this filter the best one for the job? Homeowners sensitive to seasonal allergies may want a higher level of filtration than those who aren’t bothered by pollen or pet dander. Take into consideration whether the existing filter provides adequate filtration for the current environment and the needs of the inhabitants.
- Do I want a disposable or permanent filter? Disposable filters cost less but have to be replaced frequently. Permanent filters cost more initially, but can be cleaned and used for several years at a time. If your system can be fitted with a permanent filter, is it worth the cost?
