Three Myths About MERV

Merv Filter

MERV is one of several standards methods of rating air filters. MERV ratings are used to indicate the particle size that a filter can capture. The higher the number, the smaller the particles the filter can trap and keep from the air circulating through the system.

Everyone thinks they know what MERV ratings mean…but there are a lot of misunderstandings out there about what it actually means. Here are three common myths about MERV. Do any of these seem familiar?

Myth 1: MERV is a rating of quality. If a filter package is marked with a MERV rating, it’s a good filter.

Truth: MERV doesn’t measure quality. It’s a standard way to describe the size of the particles that the filter can remove from the air. Dust, smoke, and virus particles (just to name a few examples) are all different sizes. The higher the MERV rating of the filter, the smaller the particle size it can remove from the air.

Myth 2: It’s fine to use any MERV rated filter in my system.

Truth: You should always use a filter with a MERV rating within the guidelines given by the manufacturer of your filter system. Using a filter with a MERV rating higher than the recommended number can actually be counterproductive since it can restrict the airflow in the system. Restricting the airflow forces your system’s motor to work harder, which can wear it out faster, use more energy, or damage the components.

Myth 3: Higher MERV filters will save money because they need to be changes less often.

Truth: You should change your filters whenever they look dirty or according to the schedule recommended by your HVAC contractor. MERV rating doesn’t have anything to do with longevity of the filter.
