If you don’t remember the last time you changed your home air filter, it’s time to look now! Air filters inside your home keep the air clean and free from contaminants. Clean filters also help your system work efficiently, reducing energy costs and wear-and-tear on your system’s motor. So it pays to put a reminder in your calendar and schedule replacement air filters.
Replacement Filters: When to Change?
Even though most homes have easily accessible air filters behind grilles or screens, you probably don’t look at yours that often. So it takes awhile to learn what a dirty air filter actually looks like, and when to replace them. Hopefully the 3 pictures we’ve included in this blog can help tell what dirty residential air filters looks like.
Of course, if the filter is up in the ceiling, it may be hard to see it. Then you can rely on a schedule for replacement filters. When to change your home’s air filters depends on the size of your home, how many people live there, and even how many pets (and what kind of pets you have.) A home with two adults and a Chihuahua will probably need to change the air filter less frequently than a house with two adults, two kids, and two Persian cats.
The following rough guidelines should be adapted to your needs, but can be used as a simple rule of thumb to schedule replacement filters:
- Single occupant home, with no allergies or pets: Change your air filters twice a year, usually every six months.
- Typical family with several people and no pets: Change your filter every 90 days.
- Family with allergies and several pets: Change filters monthly.
