High efficiency filters, or HEPA filters, were originally created to keep fine particles from entering into HVAC systems and damaging sensitive components. Over time, they have become commonplace, as both protectors of the equipment and protectors of the air quality for residents inside buildings running them. A good high efficiency filter can keep people healthier and equipment cleaner – but only if it’s properly maintained.
To make sure that you get the maximum benefits from your high efficiency filters, follow these maintenance tips:
- Use the correct size filter for your system: Poorly-fitted filters with gaps between the filter frame and the opening enable air to bypass the filter and enter the system without filtration. Dust and other contaminant can waltz right by the filter and go on into the equipment, or circulate back into the air you breath. It defeats the purpose of having a filter in the first place. Always use the correct size filter for your system. If you can’t find the correct size, Twin City Filter Service can make custom filters for your system.
- Change filters regularly: High efficiency filters only work when they aren’t clogged with particles. Dirty filters strain the system and don’t do much to keep the air clean, either. Change filters on a regular basis according to the manufacturer’s recommendations or based on your own observations. If the filter looks dirty to you, chances are good that it is, and it should be cleaned.
- Clean around the frame when you change filters: Take a dust rag and wipe down the opening and the duct surfaces you can reach. Bag dirty filters before disposing of them properly. These little steps keep dust, dirt and debris down to a minimum.
High efficiency filters do a good job of trapping particles before they enter the system, but they can only do a good job if you use the correct size, change you filters regularly, and keep the filter frame clean.
