It sounds strange, but it’s true; high-efficiency filters can actually have a positive effect on the workforce.
Most office buildings run their systems at the default occupation densities found in the office. The American Society for Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recommends in Standard 62.1 a minimum ventilation rate of just over 15 CFM per person.
The National Air Filtration Association ran an article that included facts about what happens when you improve the quality of indoor air with high-efficiency filters. Higher ventilation rates of up to 60 CFM per person reduce the incidence of ‘sick building syndrome’ and the spread of respiratory viruses. A study from the Harvard School of Public Health correlated higher ventilation rates with lower CO2 levels and reduced exposure to volatile compounds.
It seems that improved air filters, especially high-efficiency filters, can make people feel better because the air quality improves. Given that most office workers remain indoors for eight or more hours each, improvements in indoor air quality can lead to reduced sickness, improved productivity, better cognition and enhanced memory. It pays to improve filtration for your workers!
